Now back home in Ghana after being cleared of drug charges in the UK, perhaps there is no better way for Daasebre Gyamenah to continue his career by basking in the popularity of his new album, A Friend in Need, which has been doing so well that it was nominated in two categories at the recent Ghana Music Awards.
The album which has nine songs on it was nominated for Best Highlife Album while one song, wafom, was nominated for Best Highlife Song.
Wafom is a fast paced highlife song which talks about the disappointments and heart-breaks which exist in relationships. Here, he musician sings that it is a great offence for either party in a love relationship to break each other’s promises.
One feature about Daasebre’s songs which cannot be easily over-looked is his good song-writing skills. His lyrics are mostly filled with rich Akan proverbs and popular local jargons to either narrate a scenario or give advice.
Another song which has been enjoying considerable airplay is Sete in which the singer talks about how he was deceived into falling in love with a beautiful lady only to be heartbroken in the end.
The highlife rhythm which is fused with the jama beat in this song will move many music lovers to their feet.
The title-song, A Friend in Need, is a reggae piece with very nice instrumentation. The sounds of the saxophone, organ and bass guitar make it enjoyable.
Maama No Ntokwa is another good song which goes in a mid-tempo vein in which the singer talks about his undying love for his lover.
Other songs on the album are Abofra Besu and Hwenpo Aduro.
