If there is one artiste who is most qualified to break the perceived Ghana Music Award’s jinx that has so far prevented any musician from winning the topmost award twice, that artiste is Ofori Amponsah.
Unlike his predecessors - Daddy Lumba, Kojo Antwi, Lord Kenya, Kontihene, VIP and Obuor - Ofori Amponsah’s song Emmanuella, coming so closely on the heels of Otoolege which won him the top award last year, the man appears miles ahead of his fellow nominees for the Most Popular Song award.
Curiously, none of the artistes who has ever made it to the top on the GMA awards list has ever repeated the feat. Not only do they not win the award again but indeed it has been observed that the winners’ careers take a dip soon after the award.
All that might change this weekend when Ofori Amponsah walks onto the podium to receive the Most Popular Song award for Emmanuella.
Last year, Ofori Amponsah took away seven awards. These comprised Producer of the Year, Most Popular Song of the Year, Album of the Year, Artiste of the Year, Contemporary Highlife Song of the Year, Contemporary Highlife Album of the Year, and Contemporary Highlife Artiste of the Year.
Together with Kofi Nti and K.K. Fosu, Ofori Amponsah also picked up the Best Collaboration of the Year award.
This year, Kweku Gyasi, Lord Kenya and Obrafour are neck to neck with Ofori Amponsah with five nominations apiece while Wuta, Samini and Ewura Esi have four nominations each.
Artistes with three nominations are as many as eight. They comprise King Ayisoba, Praye, Kwasi Pee, Castro, Dada KD, Moses OK, Ohemaa Mercy and Christiana Love.
The awards are: Most Popular Song of the Year, Artiste of the Year, Discovery of the Year, Album of the Year, Hiplife Album of the Year, Highlife Album of the Year, Gospel Album of the year, Hiplife Song of the Year, hiplife Artiste of the Year, African Pop Song of the Year (Ghana) and Highlife Song of the Year.
The rest are: Gospel Song of the year, Gospel Artiste of the Year, Best Collaboration of the Year, African Artiste of the Year, African Music Legend, Record of the Year, Best Male Vocal Performance (Solo/Group), Best Female Vocal Performance (Solo/group) and Traditional Song of the Year.
Billed to perform at the public awards night on Saturday are Hugh Masekela from South Africa, D. Banj from Nigeria, Jeff Bogologobo from Cote D’Ivoire and the very best from Ghana.
This year’s Ghana Music Awards is sponsored by Areeba, Unique Trust, Western Union , GTV, Golden Tulip, and Coca Cola.
