Over the past few weeks, death’s unexpected wind has blown through the arts and entertainment sector of this country. This has become a worry for most people who seem not understand these sudden occurrences.
Naturally, different people die everyday from different backgrounds for different reasons but this year which is already half way through has not been a good one at all for the industry. In barely two months, several celebrities have past away so sudden beyond all imaginations. The abrupt demise of radio presenter, actor, student and artiste manager Mufty Dabre was the genesis of this whole series of sudden deaths. The shock of his death that occurred on Thursday 14 June remains such a mystery for so many people. Though he died after a brief illness, nobody really could tell its source as he did a number of medical test, all to no avail when he was alive.
After his death, people said many things reading different meanings. Some believed it was a natural death and others thought it was spiritual but what ever it was that killed, him remains unknown. Almost a month latter the death of accordion maestro Bishop Michael Osei Bonsu was reported on Friday 6th July and as a gospel musician of his magnitude shock struck his fans and family member. In Bishop's case, may be his death was expected because he had straggled with a nasal disease for more than nine months.
Though the death of Bishop Michael Osei Bonsu was such a great lost to the whole music industry, it was not so sudden to those who were around him as they describe his last ten months on of his life suffering and going through pain with a disease no one could really tell it source. Bishop was clearly sick before his death but at the initial stages this same disease was linked to a ¢70 million controversy between the late Bishop and Pastor Love Hammond which amounted to an alleged death threats from Poster love. However, Mr. Love denied but accusing fingers were pointed to Pastor Love after his death. Around the same time the music industry lost another personality David Laryea Afforty better known as "Apor" Executive Director of Prince Dave group of companies a mother company of Prince Dave Records producers of musical artistes like Pope Skinny, LA, 4x4 Bright of Buk Bak and also responsible for the current album of Castro d' Destroyer. Apor was strong and going round his normal duties and all of a sudden, he started vomiting blood.
During his sick days a source close to Apor said he kept mentioning a particular name (They refused to mention) to be the person who wants to kill him. According to other sources, he was involved in a controversy over a land ownership. Not knowing what or who really killed him, a man who was contributing so much for bringing up young talents and generous to countless people is gone down. He died with tears dripping on his cheeks. How sad? Last Monday July 16, the entertainment community suffered another unanticipated astonishment when music arranger, composer and producer Khodjo Acquai’s death was reported. He was said to have suffered high blood pressure and died of an acute heart failure. Again, his death has been linked to the way things are, in the music industry. As if that was enough Mr. K.K Duah a producer, executive producer and C.E.O of Kays Frequency also died last Friday 20th July after a short illness and surely, there will be matters arising. The varying circumstances surrounding the death of all these showbiz personalities has in one way or the other created doubts on the course of their death. It has also become a nom that, whenever a celebrity dies there is something fishy about it. Does this mean no showbiz personality has ever died a natural death? Could it also be that the activities these personalities get themselves involved in during their time on earth is what raises eyebrows after they die?
The individual contributions of these great men cannot be overlooked and their absence is strongly felt. Like the long awaited biblical rapture, death has taken away the lives of these very important personalities one after the other. This has created a lot of tension among musicians, actors, producers, radio presenters and anybody who is some how linked to the entertainment industry as to who the next victim is going to be.
Death's unpredictable nature has made it impossible to figure out who next will be called to glory. Whether we like it or not death is inevitable. Smile to the next person and take a close look at him or her because that might be the last time you will meet. The big question is who will go next?
