Three months and 42 episodes later surviving eviction weeks, Frederica, Justice, Betty and Clare had a face off at the final event that culminated the search for a music icon. It turned out that out of the hundreds that auditioned, Justice Akwasi Nhyira Owen took home the car.
It was not as plain sailing as that: there were a lot of surprises. The Shabbo Crew Band did a great job of cooling down the tempers seeing as the audiences grown impatient. Starting the night, all the evictees came up with Jane and Irene singing Irene's song. A young girl who may have been touched by the performance went up to give Irene a bunch of flowers.
Both in stunning white suits, hosts Chris and Jessica welcomed the audience to the night of great display of talent. Ishmael, Daniel, Noble and Twum Barima did an interpretation of Dionne Warwick's 'Something Inside'. Maybe it was Twum Barima, or Noble, perhaps it was all four of them, but at the end of their show, they got a standing ovation. Next up were Isaac and Ernest with 'Happy Day'. It was equally good although they didn't get a big a hand, as did the rest.
Justice, Frederica, Clare and Betty, the final four started their night with a medley of local songs that most definitely rocked the crowd! Even then Justice showed he was in his own league. When they finished, Chris couldn’t resist the tracks of the DJ and came up with some cool dance moves.
As usual, there were the three main judges and for a special, Abraham Ohene-Djan (OM Studios) was added to the family. After their introductory speeches was the greatest surprise for the night.
Ramzy who placed second in last years Stars of the Future but had been in the custody of police for an alleged car theft this year came singing Tyrese's ‘Chapter 126’ and stressing on the “freedom” part of the song. It came as such a shock that it took a while for people to react. By the time they did, the song was over.
For the final show, there were two rounds: the first being a choice from any African artist and the second being the My Song category. What the My Song category is, is simply an original composition of the contestant.
Leading the pack in the first round was Betty doing ‘Malaika’ by Miriam Makeba. Nana King liked the fact that she put a little more step into her stage presence but thought she could have taken a better song. For the very first song she had ever written, Bibie Brew- did that wonderfully.
Clare did Brenda Fassi's ‘Voolidela’. Her performance could be described as her best performance thus far. She brought out everything she had hidden throughout the show with more attitude and an extra zing or attitude. Nana admired her persistence in the show and surmised that she had shown a lot of confidence in her performance. Bibie commented that the song suited her liked audience interaction skill.
Justice took up Kojo Antwi's Me do fo pa. It was really refreshing. Nana tight kpn! Ab let the audience scream. Brew the audience tells it all. Mallet- i really feel u is true rep for the new generation. Frederica did Onyeka Onyewu. Her perfo got Timi up and dancing along. With an extra padding on her behind. Exhibited her note sustainability. Nana- come a far way, was a dynamite, deserved to be here. Ab- crowd enjoyed it. Brew- liked her gimmicks. Mallet- big things come in small packages. 50-50 voting chance. Irene and Jane did a great show and for once, the dancers were wonderful! It got the crowd pumped for the Second and final round which was the My Song category.
Songs that they themselves have put together. All i really want, produced by Danny Netty and dedicated to her best friend who got heart broken with her first love. Got a very willing man from the audience with a very displeased wife looking on. All the wife would really want to do is to smack him on the back of his head. Mallet- no variety, more vocab. Brew- bravo for 1st song, would be a wonderful singer. Ab- great song, will still do well if she leaves. Nana- more ad libs.
Clare- based on her entire experience with Stars of the Future. Hers was a more inspiring song showing more colour than Betty's composition. Very touchy lyrics. Nana- words good for the song, tighten up sqeaky ends. Brew- well structured, pay attention to little notes, very nice song. Mallet- very mature, complicated, concentrate on song writing. Ab-good song. Justice went for 'We need to love' was motivated by all the wars in the world. So mature that it could pass for a soundtrack for some UNICEF documentary. Nana- congrats, is already a star.
Ab- something very special. Brew- has been consistent, precise concise and lovely. Mallet- straight to the point. Frederica did 'All because of you' it was a bit of a deviation from the usual cool Frederica. Still gospel though. Nana- enjoyed the show, showed a lot of confident got a kpn! From both nana and crowd. Ab- is a star and no matter what happens is a star.
Brew- always refreshing. Mallet- a producer's dream. Timi came up and did 3 wonderful songs. Twum Barima did a song produced by Mallet just for entertainment purposes- worlds apart. 4th was betty, 3rd was Clare 2nd Free was 366.1st was Justice whose only way of expressing his joy was taking the audience through about 20mins of praise and worship.
