Ghana’s spirit is vibrant, it shines on the roof of our churches, shines through our drums, and it shines on the hands of an artist hard at work. One such artist whose hard work over the years is yielding tremendous result is Emmanuel Samini aka Samini. Samini is a superstar who started from a real humble beginning. From the ghetto he rose through the ranks and file of the industry and has since been receiving various awards and appointments.
In the year 2003, the trinity boys who consisted of Kokoveli, K.K Fosu and Batman (Samini) were awarded with the best collaboration at the GMA awards. The following year saw a collaboration he did with King David which was also awarded for best collaboration in 2004. During this period Samini found himself featuring on almost every hit on radio before the release of his first album. The album toped music charts in the country with the “Linda” track. The album went on to win two awards in 2005 GMA awards, specifically New artist of the year and Hiplife artist of the year. These awards encouraged him to work harder. In 2006 he released his second album, Samini Music. This album raised him to higher heights. The album swept away four awards at the 2007 GMA awards. He was also nominated for Best African Act at the MOBO Awards2006. By Jah’s grace he won the award raising the colors of Ghana high. This followed a deal to shoot a free video for the Samini track in South Africa. The video was sponsored by Motorola and channel O after hosting the urban massive crew in Ghana. This has since been followed by various appointments which includes; An Ambassador for CAN 2008, An Ambassador for Debate to action a youth development program designed to train young entrepreneurs and women empowerment. This is an initiative of the British Council. Samini was appointed by UNICEF together with Rocky Dawuni to work on a water project in Tolong and Kumbugu in the Northern region. In August this year he was appointed to be the face of MTN. This is to say that with two albums, Samini has been able to make very good use of his time and has really served the country in his own capacity. He was recently nominated in three categories at the just ended Spirit of Africa Video Awards organized by Channel O. unfortunately he lost all 3 awards. “Still give thanks to Jah, people think I’m down now but on the contrary I’m still confident and still keeping the fire burning. I believe it’s a challenge to work hard down here not only for me but other artists too because the international media is watching. The way forward now is the EMA Awards which I have been nominated for the Best African Act, let us all support me as a nation and vote to help keep the flag flying high”, he said.
“It’s not all about Samini but the more they hear about Samini and Ghana out there, the more they get interested and want to know what more is here in Ghana so I strongly believe it’s a national thing. All those who attend shows with Samini on the bill and never get to see him perform, my apology. Such promoters don’t reach us but still go ahead to use my name. My apology to all those who are exploited”, he added. “I might come around you with some fire soon. Still keep supporting me and my music”.
He promises his new album will be deeper in consciousness to change the thoughts of the youth today to think positively. “It’s better to stay and work in Africa than to travel abroad to do donkey jobs which is still slavery. To all Ghanaian youth keep the fire burning and always remember RASTAFARI lives” big ups to Asasease Records.
