Ghanaian reggae artiste, Kwesi Selassie will be vying for an award of the “Reggae album of the year” at this years Juno Awards on the 1st of April 2007, at the Canadian city of Saskatoon.
Kwesi Selassie’s album Survival will be contending with hit songs like Hard To See by Humble, Xrated by Korexion Kornerstone, Monte le son by Kulcha Connection and In The Streets by Trinity Chris.
In a telephone conversation from his base in Canada, he stated that his nominee for the award underscores the appreciation of his hard work by people in Canada and the world over.
He continued that, over a thousand reggae artistes, most of who are Jamaicans submitted their works to be nominated for the award, so for him as a Ghanaian to end up among the top five is a great honour.
As to chances of winning, he said he is not keeping his hopes very high, but believes that being among the top five even makes him feel a winner.
At the tender age of 11, the Ghanaian native began singing and playing the guitar (fashioning an instrument out of wires over empty tomato cans).
Bass, drums and percussion also aroused his interest and he soon became known as the Musical Prince. He has played with spectacular bands all over West Africa, and continues his passion for recording and performing in Canada.
The night will also witness other top stars like Nelly Faurtado, Madonna and Justin Timberlake contending for award in different categories.
