After taking the Most Popular Song and Best Male Artiste awards from Ceval Gospel Awards last year, Kwaku Gyasi says he expects to win the same awards and more, come the Ghana Music Awards festival next month.
“I will win these awards because I believe that I deserve them. When a man does a good job, he needs to be acknowledged and that is what I expect” he said.
What if he does not win those awards? Kwasi Gyasi said: “I know it is not likely to happen that way. If that happens I will have nothing to say but rather I will leave it to the public to judge."
He said about 80 per cent of the population in the country had heard about his album, Onyame Aseda, and almost all of these people at least knew how to sing the title track and that showed how popular his album was.
Kwaku Gyasi has been nominated in five pulic-voting categories of the Ghana Music Awards Jubilee Festival. These are: Most Popular Song, Overall Artiste of the Year, Gospel Song of the Year, Gospel Artiste of the Year, and Best Male Vocal Performance.
Kwaku Gyasi started singing at age six. At that time, he had to be lifted onto a table for him to be seen by his audience.
Fifteen years after, he realised his talent was into music when he became a singing group leader at Kumasi Secondary School which he completed in 1998.
According to him, when he finished his first album, Onokwafo, it was difficult for him to get a producer. “Producers frustrated me when I approached them, which almost made me give up”.
Kwaku Gyasi said Mr and Mrs John Mensah Sarpong and some elders in his church, Kumasi Asafo Assembly Pentecost, encouraged him and promised to assist him. “With the help of these people I was able to come out with my first album”.
Kwaku Gyasi who says his voice is a gift from God attracted the attention of music lovers when he came out with his album Onyame Aseda in 2005.
Onyame Aseda has since been very successful and received a lot of air play and has stayed on major music charts in the country.
The album opens with the title song, Onyame Aseda, which expresses the graciousness of God and he sings that as long as believers live they should praise the name of the Lord and serve him well because their living on earth is just by the mercy of God.
Onyame Ye is also another song on the album. Here Kwaku sings in appreciation of the sacrifice Christ made on the cross to change humanity.
Kronkron is a prayerful song. In this piece his prayer suggests that God should send his spirit to fill all believers for them to lead good lifestyles.
The album features other songs like Eye Adom, Enye Mahoden, Bisa Nyame, Once I Was a Sinner, Great Things He Has Done, Awurade Ne Me Dwom, Odo Nyankopon, Jesus Wado Yo Dooso, Onyame Ye Da Wase and Blessed Be The Name.
Born to Angelina Appiah and Kwame Kyei, Kwaku Gyasi is from Elmina in the Central Region. He said his vision was to become one of the greatest gospel musicians in the world and also help to improve the level of Christianity in the country through music.
Kwaku Gyasi is married to Angelina Gyasi a business woman in the US.
