GHANA BREWERIES Limited has introduced a talent show dubbed, ‘Malta Guinness Street Dance Africa’ to help skillful Ghanaian dancers to showcase their talent at the world level.
The showdown, which would search for the best, vibrant and skilled dancers from across the country, was launched at the International Trade Fair Centre in Accra on Wednesday, March 19.
This was to pave way for series of auditions scheduled for five different regions where regional finals would be held. Crews of six or four with the best dance sequence were expected to enter the competition which would have a panel of judges including Slim Busterr.
The dancers would battle for a chance to compete at the Pan African Championships in Lagos, Nigeria, and eventually on the world stage in the United Kingdom The first regional final is slated for Takoradi on April 5, at the Akroma Plaza, with the second taking place in Kumasi at the Prempeh Assembly Hall on April 19. While the third one comes off in Accra on May 1 at the La Beach, Tamale would host the fourth finals on May 17 at the Picorna Hotel. The last final would take place in Ho at the Ho Poly Auditorium on May 31, with the National Finals scheduled for the National Theatre in Accra on June 14.
Ultimate champions of the national finals would win the honour of representing Ghana at the Pan African Championships, which would witness the participation of Tanzania, and Nigeria among other African countries. Whichever of these countries comes first in the African competition would represent the continent in the International World Street Dance Championships in August 2008, working with top stylists, and professional choreographers.
Briefing the media about prizes for winners, Edwin Baffour, Marketing Manager of Ghana Breweries Limited said, “Malta Guinness is supporting the competition with cash prizes and oncein-a-lifetime rewards, dance classes with expert dance instructors and a day’s dancing at London’s famous Pineapple studios - dance school to the stars, as well as a DVD of their performances on stage.”
Winners of the national competition, according to him, would win a whopping GH˘5,000 and automatically qualify for the next level.
The second-placed crew at the nationals would win GH˘3,000 while the third-placed group picks up GH˘1,500.
Fourth and fifth placed crews will also get GH˘500, each. All winners will receive crates of Malta Guinness as well as branded souvenirs.
Street dancers and wannabe dance stars aged 18years and above are from March 20 expected to form dance crews of four or six people. The groups should visit local recruitment centers at regions where leaflets and demonstration videos will be available to give more information on what is needed to take part.
